Building A Wind Turbine

An interesting look at the building of a wind turbine from the ground up from the MidAmerican Energy company. These wind turbines are massive projects that require quite a bit of concrete and other materials to build. I takes about 3 weeks to install one of the turbines from start to finish. One can only hope the energy produced by a wind turbine outweighs the cost to build one over it’s useful life. 25 Ways to Cut Down On Sugar

25 Tips to Keeping a Low-Sugar Lifestyle

Sugar is a wonderful thing for the tongue, but can be a horrible thing for our health. Excess sugar leads to obesity, diabetes, cancer and many other diseases and illnesses. Most of us realize at some point that we curb our appetite for sugar. But sugar is highly addictive, and it's not easy beginning a lifestyle much reduced in sugar. Here are 25 golden rules to leading a low-sugar lifestyle.

healthy
1. Reduce the amount of sugar SLOWLY
Some people try to cut sugar out of their lives immediately, going cold turkey. What they forget is that sugar is an addictive substance, a VERY addictive substance. Once your body gets used to it, quitting all at once can be a horrible experience, leading to bad emotional states, anxiety and even physical symptoms such as fatigue and sweats. Studies also show that quitting sugar all at once leads to a higher risk of returning to full time consumption. It's healthier and better to slowly decrease your intake over a couple of weeks time.

2. Consume whole foods
Whole foods don't contain added sugar. So why not stick to fruits, vegetables and meat products in their original condition, and reap the benefits?

3. Prepare your own meals
Get out that cookbook and start cooking for yourself. That way you know exactly how much sugar is in your meal, and you get no surprises from food places that add a little sugar "for taste".

4. Become suspicious of 'sugar free' labels
So it doesn't have sugar. But it DOES have artificial sweeteners that, besides increasing your risk of certain cancers, trick your body into thinking glucose is being delivered. When it fails to, you will feel hungrier, and look for something sweet again. So watch out for those "no sugar" labels.

5. "Fat-Free" is just as bad
Yes, it's fat-free, but it usually contains added sugar or sweeteners, to make  up for the lesser flavor of foods with less fat.

6. It's time to know your labels
All foods carry labels. We know it's no fun trying to understand them, but once you read a few you'll see they repeat themselves, and you can easily start to identify those that have the most natural ingredients and less artificial ingredients, as well as the preparation techniques that use no added sugars or sweeteners. Compare the labels you read to labels of products you KNOW are bad for you, find what is similar and what is different to know you've made the right choice.

sodas

7. No sodas, no non-natural juices
Almost all of these drinks are pretty much sugar water. So if you're serious about getting your sugar intake way down, avoid these like the plague.

8. That includes diet sodas, too
As we've said before, artificial sweeteners will just make your body crave more sugar. Diet sodas are full of those, and will enlarge your sweet tooth. Sorry to say, diet sodas should be avoided just like regular sodas.

9. Start your days with a good amount of protein
Eggs, protein shake, yogurt - try to start your day with a breakfast that contains food products such as these. They will keep your blood sugar levels normal and limit your cravings for sweets. An added benefit is that they will also help control your metabolism for the rest of your day.
10. Don't forget your meals - no skipping
We all forgo a lunch or dinner here and there. Sometimes we're busy, sometimes just too tired to feel like eating. But it backfires, because we get more cravings for sweets this way, and we may easily turn to sugar to plug that hole.
11. Emergency snacks are an important resource
Nutrition experts such as Dr. Mark Hyman recommend having an emergency snack-pack close to you at all times. So when you get that craving, you have something immediate to reach out to, such as fresh fruit, nuts, jerky or whole foods. This way you're not tempted to go out to the vending machine closest to you and succumb to your sweet tooth.

12. Drink, and drink a lot
It may not seem connected, but when we're thirsty, our body increases our cravings for food and sweets. Keep yourself hydrated and those cravings will subside.

healthy

13. Choose fruits
Fresh fruits will hydrate you, supply you with much needed fiber and help you metabolize fructose, a much better way to answer the call of your sweet cravings than any processed food.
14. But even more than fruit - go for vegetables and nuts
Fruit is very healthy, but also sweet, and that sweetness will keep your addiction to sugar in existence. Limit yourself to a small amount of fruit a day (1-2) and tgo for veggies, nuts and seeds as the best types of snacks.

15. There are healthy fats around, keep them closeby
Healthy fats, like those found in extra virgin olive oil, avocados, nuts and seeds, will get you to a place where you feel full, have lots of energy, and enjoy a balanced blood-sugar level.

healthy

16. Everything has a natural substitute - find it.
White sugar can be replaced with honey or molasses (keep the amounts small). These provide great flavor with a lot more nutrients, and will keep your sugar intake lower.

17. Spice up your life
Another great way of satisfying your craving for something sweet is using spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon, paprika, cardamom and many others that have a sweetness to them without adding sugar.

18. Try a week of black coffee
I know not everyone enjoys black coffee, but it just takes a little getting used to. Take a 7 day trial and drink only black coffee. Studies have shown it can reduce the risk of diabetes as well as certain types of cancer, and is a real metabolism booster. Drink it slowly and absorb the rich taste and experience. You don't need sugar to enjoy that special aroma.

19. Like chocolate? Join the dark side
Dark chocolate contains A LOT less sugar than its milky counterpart, and can be very good for you.

healthy

20. Don't do it alone
Fighting your sugar craving is so much better when you're not doing it alone. Maybe you have a friend, a loved one or a significant other who can also use a sugar reduction? Most of us do. Pair up and give each other much needed support. Cook together and talk to each other when the cravings get really bad. It can be a huge comfort and stop you before making that craving come true.
21. Know the other names of sugar
When looking for sugar content, sometimes you may miss its other names. Names like "Black strap molasses", "Agave Nectar", "Dried oat syrup" or even "Evaporated cane juice". These aren't EXACTLY sugars, but your body still treats them the same. So be on the lookout, and keep reading those labels!

22. Never assume a product or food is devoid of sugar
You wouldn't think there is sugar in a salad, right? Or in a sauce or meat glaze? But sometimes there are. If you're at a restaurant, ask your waiter about sugar content. If you're buying a product, once again - check the label. Never assume something is sugar free just because it doesn't make sense for it to have sugar. It gets added to a surprising amount of foods.
23. The glycemic index is not the final answer
The glycemic index scale measures glucose, but not fructose. Sugars are metabolized differently and have different effects on our body, so the GI scale is not enough to judge.
healthy

24. Sleep, and sleep well
When we don't get enough sleep (or enough quality sleep), we fall behind on our energy needs, and will often look for something to fill that energy hole - such as sugar, sugary coffee or tea etc. Get 7-8 hours of good sleep a night to avoid empowering your cravings.

25. Track your emotions
A lot of the time we reach out to that sugary goodness to compensate for a bad emotional state, and not because we're truly hungry. Notice how you are feeling when cravings strike. Knowing is half the battle, and when you're aware of your emotional state, you can counter that craving with something that makes you happy or brings you joy that isn't sugary food.

5 things you didn't know about the Pez dispenser

The Pez candy dispenser is a pop culture icon.

There's no mistaking the tilted heads that dispense pastel colored candy stacked in a narrow column.

Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh and Hello Kitty have graced Pez dispenser heads and recently Anna and Elsa from the movie "Frozen" have also joined the line-up. Next year, expect to see the 'Batman vs Superman' movie characters making an appearance. Also expect new flavors like banana.

Pez was originally invented in Austria in 1927, but the company's only factory and headquarters are located in Orange, CT. It is owned by the Haas family who are descended from the inventor of the candy, Eduard Has III.

Here are 5 things you might not have known about Pez:

1. Requests for personal Pez heads are made every day. The company turns them down. A Kim Kardashian dispenser request was recently given the thumbs down.

2. Santa Claus is the highest-selling Pez dispenser, since it was created in 1955.

3. The most expensive Pez dispenser sold for $13,000. It was a political donkey made in 1961. Only two were ever made.

4. All the Pez distributed worldwide comes from one factory in Orange. It produces 12 million tablets of Pez every day and uses up 50,000 pounds of sugar every 4 days. Over 3 billion Pez candies are consumed in the U.S. alone each year.

5. Pez was originally created with a peppermint flavor to try to get Austrians to quit smoking. The campaign proved to be quite successful in Austria. However when Pez came to America in the early 1950s, it didn't quite have the same effect.  The company then started producing flavored tablets which got popular with American kids, and the rest is history.

8 Surefire Ways an Apple Watch Can Increase Your Sales Closing Rate

8 Surefire Ways an Apple Watch Can Increase Your Sales Closing Rate

There is no doubt that the Apple Watch in itself represents a major cool factor and perhaps serves as a great icebreaker as well. But you may not yet be aware that given the right business apps, your wearable device may be your new secret weapon to being the smartest person in the room at your next meeting.
As you well know, a CRM system stores valuable insights about your customer – everything from bios, to purchasing history, to the address of their office. Imagine if all of this could be available on your watch. Now we’re talking … and closing some deals! Check out some of the possibilities below

  1. The 411. Never walk into a meeting unprepared. You want everyone at the meeting to think you spent your morning reading the New York Times. Fortunately, your Apple Watch knows what company you are meeting with, per your calendar, and can provide you with the most recent headlines, stock information for public companies, and more.
  2. Attendees. Who’s in the room? Don’t be the guy (or gal) that can’t tell the CIO from the CFO. Ensure that you have access to names, job titles, photos, and brief bios of everyone attending the meeting and greet them like they are your long-lost best friends.
  3. Time keeping. Time management in a productive meeting is always key. You don’t want to look at a clock and be surprised to find out that there are 10 minutes left in the meeting and you have only covered half the items on your agenda. Your Apple Watch will keep time on your meeting and ensure you are managing the agenda accordingly.
  4. ETA updates. Speaking of running late, reality is that some meetings do run over. And this often throws your schedule off for the rest of the day. Imagine if, with a few quick swipes on your Apple Watch, you could notify your assistant, the attendees of your next meeting, and your manager of your revised ETA.
  5. Pipeline. When you’re running from meeting to meeting, it’s hard to keep track of the details of each unique opportunity. CRM on your wrist will enable you to get a quick view of your pipeline and the status of the account you are meeting with.
  6. Calendars. New city, new rental car, and your plane arrived late so you are short on time. Sound familiar? You’ll arrive with time to spare thanks to calendar integration between your Apple Watch and your CRM.
  7. Service history. Don’t be the last to know about your customer’s service history. CRM integration with your watch will ensure that you have a high-level view of service activity so you can proactively address any issues with your customer.
  8. Follow-up. Last but certainly not least, a successful meeting always involves follow-up items. Imagine the time you could save if you could quickly send an e-mail to all meeting attendees via your Apple Watch. And what about your Type-A boss? Don’t wait too long to debrief him or her – send them a detailed voice memo from your watch

Why your rent just keeps going up

San Francisco rents were up 15% in April from last year, according to Zillow

It's gotten a lot harder to make the rent.

Rents have been soaring across the country, even outpacing home values, according to a recent Zillow report. Some areas are facing a particularly harsh reality: In San Francisco, renters have seen a nearly 15% yearly increase, and Denver tenants have faced an 11.6% rise.

And it's not just a big city problem.  "Places that were more traditionally affordable are growing more quickly," said Skylar Olsen, senior economist at Zillow.  The reason? A shortage of available rentals.
"Vacancy rates are at very low levels, which continues to push rents higher," said Andrew Jakabovics, senior director, Policy Development & Research at Enterprise Community Partners.

There's a lot of pressure on the rental market: Millennials are renting longer, housing inventory is tight, the housing crash has scared some would-be homeowners, and Baby Boomers are downsizing. There's also been a shift in people wanting to live in more urban areas, where renting is more common.

But there just aren't enough "For Rent" signs to keep up with the demand.
Rental construction slowed in the aftermath of the housing crisis as confidence shrank.
"We weren't building enough so when the economy recovered, vacancy rates got very tight," said Hans Nordby, a managing director with real estate research firm CoStar Group. "If you don't build apartments, it pushes rents up."

Related: House hunting horror stories

With incomes flat since the Great Recession, affordability has become a big problem too. About one in four renters in the U.S. spend at least half their household income on monthly rent payments, according to Angela Boyd, vice president at Enterprise Community Partners.
Lower- and middle-income renters tend to feel the inventory pinch the most. High-income renters who would have traditionally shifted to homeownership or occupied the more expensive rentals are staying put, according to Olsen.

Adding more supply will eventually ease some price pressure, she said. "It just takes time to creep down the distribution. People living in the older units now that aren't as luxurious migrate over to the new luxury units, and that opens up more units."
But it takes about two years for rental buildings to become available in many markets, Nordby said, so the relief won't be immediate.

Plus, the building isn't proportionate for renters of different income levels. Many of the new constructions are for high-end and luxury rental buildings, said Norby.
He added that builders in some markets have overreacted to the rental crunch and have too many units in the works.
"Now, Houston and Washington, D.C., have way too much construction relative to growth. New York doesn't have nearly enough. The same with San Francisco."

Increasing the supply will only solve part of the problem. The majority of renters nationwide live in single family homes, according to Jakabovics.
Wages and employment opportunities also need to improve to help ease the cost of renting.
"For low- and moderate-income renters, those families paying 50%, 60% and 70% of income, this crisis isn't going away anytime soon," said Boyd.

Got Water? Why Dehydration is Making You Fat and Sick.

Drinking water is becoming more scarce these days. People have replaced them with juices, sodas and energy drinks, creating a host of problems for a body that was made to drink pure water. Most people don't realize they are constantly dehydrated, even if just a little, and the body pays a hefty price for it. Hydration is important, and here's why.

Just How Big is Walmart?

You don't have to be from the U.S. to know of Walmart, the largest retail chain in the world. It is owned by the Walton family (possibly the richest family in the world). It has been around since 1962 and has since grown to unbelievable proportions.

Over the years they have opened stores all over the US, Canada and Mexico. And it doesn’t stop there. The Walton family and the Walmart Corporation own many other retail chains in 28 different countries, including: China, Germany, India, Brazil, and the UK. So even if you don’t live in the United States, you are probably still buying at Walmart, you just don’t know it.
So what makes this such a big deal?
Well the fact of the matter is that Walmart is so big, it's disturbing. When you hear about the size and the numbers that are attributed to Walmart, it’s hard not to think about things like "monopoly" and "exploitation". Here is some food for thought, I'm willing to bet that neither you nor your loved ones who shop there know all of this:
* Globally, Walmart says it employs 2.2 million people and it's very likely it employs even more then that. That huge number of people is more than America’s active military personnel (1.43 million) and almost the size of the Chinese army (2.29 million.)
* There are around 4,540 Walmart stores in the United States, more than double the number of stores in other food retail chains. There are even more Walmart International locations, over 6,301 as of March 31st 2015. More than 90% of its international stores operate under names other than Walmart, such as Asda, Bodega Aurrera, Seyiu, Best Price, Trust-Mart Hypermarket, and Todo Dia.
* The net profit of Walmart, after taxes and paying preferred dividends, was around $15.88 billion in 2014. And that’s only profit, not sales!
* Out of the 10 richest Americans, four are members of the Walton family. They’re worth more than $30 billion each, just six members of the family combined would hold more wealth than the bottom 40% of the American people.
* Walmart’s CEO, Douglas McMillon, is presumed to be paid 1,034 times more than the average Walmart worker. That is by far one of the biggest top-to-bottom differences I have ever heard about.
* Walmart says it's visited by almost 140 million shoppers a week in their U.S. stores. That’s the equivalent of about 44% of the American population.
* If you take the size of all the Walmart stores and combine it, it will exceed the size of Manhattan.
* Since Walmart is one of the biggest US gun retailers, it's no shock that it's a frequent scene for shooting incidents. It is estimated that there were 92 shooting incidents last year, and 83 in 2013.
* The Walmart Corporation and Foundation have donated $1.4 billion in cash and in-kind contributions around the world last year, which makes it one of the most charitable companies in absolute terms. And yet this is less than 0.1% of the net worth of the Walton Family Foundation and rumored to actually be a legal loophole to avoid taxing.

The Magical World of Neverland

You wouldn’t expect anything less than grandeur from Michael Jackson. The late King of Pop’s wonderland of a former home is at last up for sale. This sprawling estate, once known as Neverland Ranch, has been put on the market for a cool $100 million.
