Why Greece Matters

Like it or not, Greece is a domino that will have ripple effects throughout the rest of the world

Greece is a tiny country. It’s 0.3 % of the GDP of the world. Most private creditors took their money out of the debt-ridden nation years ago. So why is the possible exit of Greece from the Eurozone rocking markets? Because it represents what could be the end of the biggest, most benevolent experiment in globalization, ever.
On Sunday, Greek voters said “no” to Europe’s latest bailout offer. That means that a Greek exit from the Eurozone is now very likely–most analysts are putting the odds at somewhere around 60%-70% at this point. For Greeks, the next few weeks will be chaotic. Banks are closed; last week, people could take only 60 euros at a time out of ATM machines, this week it may go to as little as 20 euros. Merchants have begun eschewing credit cards in favor of hard currency as a cash hoarding mindset kicks in.
Global markets are not surprisingly down on the news and will likely be quite jittery for the next few weeks. It’s not that the economy of Greece itself matters so much–China creates a new Greece every six weeks–it’s that a Greek exit from the Eurozone calls into question the entire European experiment. Europe was always an exercise in faith: 19 countries coming together to form a made-up currency without any common fiscal policy or true political integration seemed like a great idea in good times, but was destined to be fragile in bad times.
The risk now is that a chaotic Greek exit from the Eurozone starts to undermine faith in other peripheral countries, like Italy or Spain. Watch what their bond spreads do over the next few days. If they rise a lot, it means investors are worried. While ECB head Mario Draghi has promised money dumps to help stabilize these nations and any other Eurozone countries that need help (perhaps we should start calling him “Helicoper” Mario), he can’t stop the euro from falling against the dollar, or keep investors from fleeing to “safe havens” like US T-bills. That might be good for US bond markets, but Europe’s crisis could also impact the Fed’s ability to raise interest rates in September, which until quite recently seemed like a sure thing.
No wonder President Obama and Jack Lew are getting vocal about it all–while this isn’t going to be a Lehman Brother’s style domino collapse of financial institutions (private creditors represent only about 12 % of Greek debt; most got their money out back in 2011 or 2012), there’s little question that Europe’s growth will slow, which will affect US companies and workers. The stronger dollar will also hurt US exporters.
But even more important than the short-term jitters are the longer-term economic and geopolitical impacts of the Eurozone crisis. One of the reasons that Russia has been so aggressive in places like the Ukraine is that Europe is perceived as being weak, unable to make the political integrations that would actually solve this debt crisis permanently. (That would require creating a real United States of Europe–something that requires German buy in.)
The Greeks may think that a “no” vote to Europe has increased their power to bargain for a third bailout, but I think it will be very hard to convince German voters of that (and any deal will have to pass through the Bundestag). Germans simply don’t understand why the rest of Europe can’t be more like them, despite the fact that the math doesn’t really work.
If Greece is left on its own, where will it turn for support? To Russia, China, and any number of countries in the Middle East. Suddenly, you’ve got the stability of the Balkans in play. And as it becomes clear that the future of the world’s second largest reserve currency isn’t necessary a given, that could weaken investment in Europe as a whole, throw the Eurozone back into recession, and undermine the EU on the world stage. A political bloc that can’t guarantee its own currency will also have reduced clout in any kind of political negotiation. Europe’s weakness could be very destabilizing at a time when America’s own geopolitical power has ebbed.
That’s bad news for everyone. Europe is one of the three legs of the global economic stool, along with the U.S. and China, which is in the middle of its own debt crisis. America’s recovery isn’t strong enough to pull the world along. Europe’s debt crisis is not only an economic crisis but also a political crisis–one that poses challenges not just the EU itself, but liberal democracy as the model of the future.

10 More Inventions from the Future

There’s an old expression that says “You don’t need to reinvent the wheel,” meaning that you don’t need to create something that already exists. While this is a good rule of thumb, sometimes, someone reinvents something that already exists, but improves it in a way no one expected. These 10 inventions are just that – reinventions that are simply better than the original.
1. Smart light bulbs
These amazing bulbs have been appearing in the market recently and they will revolutionize the industry! Smart lightbulbs utilize LED technology to create both energy-efficient and controllable bulbs. Each bulb comes with a Bluetooth or WiFi module which allows it to sync with your phone, tablet or computer, giving you control over illumination, on/off functions and even changing the color of the light.

10 Tips to Maximize Your Computer Mouse

While the mouse may seem like a trivial aspect of your computer, there are probably a lot of things you don't know about its use. Here are some great tips on how to maximize your use of the mouse, which will increase your overall productivity on the computer.

1. Shift Key and Mouse Click

In text editing programs like Microsoft Word and even on your regular webpage, you can highlight all or portion of a certain text using theShift key and clicking on your mouse. Place the cursor (the sign of the mouse) at the beginning of a paragraph and hold down the Shift key. Click at the end of the paragraph to highlight the entire thing, or wherever in the text that you would like to end the selection.

Another tip: Holding down the Alt key while highlighting text in a text editor will allow you to selectively highlight the text. This is most useful if a paragraph or other text is in a column.

2. Use the Scroll Wheel to The Max

Most computer mice have a scroll wheel in between the right and left click buttons that allows you to scroll up and down the page by moving the wheel. However, this wheel can be used to do much more than just scroll!

- The mouse wheel can be used as a button. Pressing down on the wheel is like clicking with a third mouse button. You can press down on a link to open the web page in a new tab in your browser. It can also be used to close a tab in the browser by clicking the wheel on an already open tab.

- Hold down the Shift key as your scroll up and down in your Internet browser to quickly move back and forward between webpages. Scrolling up goes forward while scrolling down goes back.

- To zoom in and out on a web page or document, hold down on theControl (Ctrl) key and scroll up to zoom in, scroll down to zoom out.

- Some mouse wheels can be pushed left or right to move backwards (left) and forwards (right) on a webpage.

3. Select With Double or Triple Clicks

Words can be selected by double clicking the word. If you want to highlight an entire paragraph, click the mouse button three times on the text

4. Right-Click

You can use the right-click when you want to highlight text or wish to view the properties of an object. For example, if you highlight text, you can right-click on the highlighted item and copy it, then right-click anywhere else to paste it.

Another tip: If you right-click text and drag it while continuing to hold the right mouse button, when you let go you will be given the option to move or copy the text. This will save you the extra step of having to right-click again where you want to paste the text.

5. Ctrl Key and Mouse Click

When you hold down the Ctrl key, you can left-click to select multiple files or highlight multiple sections of text. You can also hold down theCtrl key and use the down or up arrows to select the text.

6. Use Mouse Side Buttons

Newer computer mice have side buttons on the side of the mouse (next to the usually right and left keys). These buttons can be programmed to do most anything, but by default, the left-thumb button can be used to go back on a web page, and the right button to go forward.

7. Use Snap to Feature

Windows has a handy 'Snap To' feature that will automatically move your mouse to buttons in the dialog box, such as the 'X' to exit or the '_' to minimize. For example, to close a window, you may get a prompt asking if you really want to perform the task. With the Snap To feature, the mouse will automatically move to the OK button so that all you have to do is click if you agree. To enable this feature, open the Mouse properties under the Control Panel, and check 'Snap To' under the Pointer Options tab.
snap to
8. Manage an Open Window

Double-click on the top title bar of a window to maximize the window or, if it is already maximized, to resize it. Double click on the icon for the window in the top left corner to close that window.

9. Move the Mouse With Your Keyboard

Instead of using a regular mouse, you can enable your computer to use the number pad instead. This trick takes some time to master, but it can make your use of the computer much more efficient.

10. Hold Your Mouse Correctly!

There is no need to hold onto your mouse for dear life! The mouse will move well with just a light touch, which will also protect the health of your wrist. This is important for those that use the computer for hours a day, because incorrect posture on the mouse, or keyboard for that matter can cause a lot of unnecessary pain.

Concept Cars From the 1950s

The 1950s were a golden age of automotive innovation and design, driven by space-age technologies. During that decade, many of the American automotive companies displayed futuristic-looking concept cars in extravagant car shows and announced their commitment to innovation. Most of these concept cars never went to production, but their designs inspired and influenced the designs of commercially produced cars.
Here are a few examples that really drew the eye and bolstered the imagination. Would you drive one of these?
1.
These Incredible Concept Cars Were Never Produced - What a Shame

The Diablo was born in a time of space exploration and fascination. It was designed with the feeling of an aeroplane that was meant for the road. The car was so well-designed, it was tested and shown to have the lowest coefficient of drag ever seen on any car up to that time.

These Incredible Concept Cars Were Never Produced - What a Shame

The Centurion featured a red and white fiberglass body, airplane like interior design. a full clear "bubble top" roof and the first Backup camera in place of a Rear view mirror, although it was never shown to be functional, merely a concept.

The La Tosca was actually designed as an educational project, meant to show young engineers how difficult it is to design a car, even for experienced car designers. The project actually took 4 times longer than projected but eventually paved the way for the 1958 Licoln.

The Lincoln Futura was a concept car designed by the Lincoln division of Ford Motor Company. It was built by Ghia entirely by hand in Turin, Italy, at a cost of $250,000 (2014 equivalent: $2,200,000) and was displayed on the auto show circuit in 1955. In 1966 the car was modified by George Barris into the Batmobile, for the 1966 TV series Batman.

In the 1955 Chicago Extravaganza, Ford displayed their rear-engine concept car - the Mystere. Funnily, the shown model did not have an engine, but did display a host of new technologies that were uncommon in cars at the time, such as a control joystick between the front seats, allowing the car to be driven from either seat, a radiotelphone in a console between the two back seats, a pushbutton ignition switch, and even a television set behind the front seat.

Designed by the legendary Harley Earl, the Cyclone was a testbed for futuristic styling and technology. It featured a radar operated crash avoidance system, with the radar sensors mounted in twin "nose-cones" on the front of the car. Of the Cyclone's stylistic features, the bubble top canopy was the most prominent. Silver coated for UV protection, the canopy automatically opened along with the sliding electrically operated doors. The canopy could also be stowed in the rear compartment, where it rested on a special air-bag base.

While the X-2000 was not revolutionary in anything other than design, it was still an outstanding example of the 1950's design trends. The car might have been the inspiration for the U.S.S. Enterprise - the spaceship from the Star Trek series. In 1999, a car enthusiast saw a picture of the car in a book and decided to build his own version. That car is now appearing in car shows around the world.

This hardtop coupe's design followed the lines of the planned 1957 cars. It had many unusual features, among them a roof section that opened either by opening a door or activating a switch, well ahead of later T-Tops. The car had seats that rotated out allowing the passenger easy access, a feature later used on some Chrysler products. The Predictor also had the opera windows, or portholes, found on concurrent Thunderbirds.
